Bad Beat
When a big hand is beaten by a long shot.

Bankroll
The amount of money a player has available for poker.

Belly Buster Straight Draw
Used interchangeably with inside straight.

Bet
To put money in the pot as the first player on a specific betting round.

Bet the pot
To bet the total amount of money currently in the pot in a big bet game.

Big Bet (BB)
In limit poker, where the stakes are doubled on the two last betting rounds, a big bet is the unit you can bet / raise on the 2 last betting rounds.

Button
When there is a house dealer, a button is put in front of a player to show that he is playing the dealer’s position. The button is passed to each player in clockwise order at the beginning of every new hand played.

The amount of money it costs to buy into a tournament.

Call
To match the previous bet or raise.

|
Calling Station
A player who`s next-to-impossible to bluff and who`ll call almost any bet made.

Cap
When the maximum of raises possible on a betting round is reached.

Cash game
A game that is played with real cash (converted into chips) as opposed to a tournament where all players start with equal amounts.

Change gears
Adjusting play from loose to tight or vice versa.

|
Check
If no one has bet before you on a betting round you have the option to check. It`s free and you send the action further to the next player.

Check-Raise
To check and then raise in the same round when the action returns.

|
Chip
A plastic token used in place of cash money.

|
Cold Deck
A term often used to describe the deck by players who feel they`re not getting enough playable or winning hands.

Collusion
When two or more players cheat in a poker game.

Come Over The Top
To raise or re-raise a bet from another player.

Community Card
The cards face up on the table that all the players can use.

Cowboy
A king.

Crying Call
To call with an inferior hand.

Dead Card

Fold

Forced Bet
A bet a player is forced to put in if he wants to participate in the hand. For instance an ante or a blind.

Fourth Street
In stud poker, the fourth card dealt to each player. In Hold’em or Omaha, the fourth community card dealt.

Free Card
A card that is received without any money having been put into the pot because all active players check on that round of play.

Freeroll
A tournament that is free to enter, but with real prizes.

Freeze-out
A tournament where no player can re-buy if knocked out or add more money to his original buy-in.

Narrow the Field

Nuts

Offsuit
Cards that are not of the same suit.

On the come
To bet on a drawing hand.

When a player plays poorly after losing one or more big pots.
